ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. - Witnesses say a grandmother is a hero after she tried to save her granddaughter's life as they were being hit by a car.
Authorities have not said what their prognosis is, but both were airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center after they were hit by a car around 5 p.m. Friday in Royal Palm Beach on Okeechobee Blvd.
Witnesses say the grandmother stooped down in a parking lot to tie her shoe.
They say a car, going only a few miles an hour, ran over the grandmother as she grabbed her granddaughter and shielded her from the collision.
"She was holding the baby the whole time. The most courageous thing I've ever seen a woman do. Just grabbed that child and took the full brunt of the car. The child got up, she was screaming, she was crying, but it looked like she was OK," said Tom Adams, a witness. "If I was in that position, I wish I could be that strong. If I was in that position, I hope that that's me, that I could be the person to grab the child and not care what happens to me. That to me was just unbelievable."
Witnesses say the grandmother appeared to have injuries to her legs, while the granddaughter had injuries to her back.
They say it appears the driver cooperated with police, however, it is unclear whether she will face any charges.
None of that is confirmed by police.
The identities, ages and conditions of the victims have not been released by authorities.
