What a customer left behind for a waiter in Kansas, has ignited a social media firestorm.
The server found a message written on a credit card receipt telling him he would get no tip, because he is gay.
"I was angry. I said this is not Christian as I know it," Dr. Marvin Baker said about the encounter.
When Baker heard about a gay waiter who had been wronged by a customer at Carrabas restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas, Marvin and his homosexual partner showed up for lunch to do their part to make this right.
"I said we are here to meet the celebrity. The one who was mistreated and she said that's my son.
Would you like a table or booth? I said, wherever he's serving," recalls Baker.
The 20-year-old waiter and his mother who also works at the restaurant told us they did not want to make any comments about the hateful message a couple wrote on a credit card receipt earlier this week.
It started off with a compliment saying "thank you for your service, it was excellent. But then the customer goes on to say "we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to God."
Marvin who served as a pastor for many years and leads a bible study group for LGBT members told the waiter this was unacceptable.
"God loves us. God does not advertise or promote hate. That is not love," said Baker.
Marvin was even more shocked when he read the rest of the hateful words.
"We hope you will see the tip your f-- choices made you lose out on and plan accordingly. It is never too late for God's love. But not spared for f--s? May God have mercy on you," the message read.
"I was just infuriated with that," Baker said.
And other customers who are upset about this incident are coming to the restaurant to give the young waiter extra tips and more importantly kind words to help ease the pain he felt from this negative experience.
Baker adds, "When someone accepts you it makes you feel kinda good. It's nice to know that someone cares."
The restaurant issued a statement saying, "We do not tolerate discrimination from either employees or our guests. We embrace diversity and believe in treating everyone with respect."
