JERSEY SHORE, Pa. - A couple in Pennsylvania found an unusual looking squirrel in their backyard.

Not just any squirrel. A purple one.

After they found the strangely-colored creature, they trapped it and took several pictures.

They have no idea why it's purple, and everyone has a theory.

A curator at the Pittsburgh Zoo and P-P-G Aquarium says some animals take on the color of what they eat.

In this case, however, he says the squirrel may have come into contact with some sort of dye.

The couple released the squirrel back into the wild on Tuesday.

And it has apparently been busy.

The Pennsylvania purple squirrel has a Facebook page and a Twitter account.
