NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans to create a pornographic website to promote its animal rights and vegan diet message.

Associate director of campaigns Lindsay Rajt tells The Virginian-Pilot that the Norfolk-based group has applied with ICM Registry to launch the website peta.xxx.

Rajt says the website would be erotica, not hard-core porn. It will have sexually suggestive content and nudity.

She says the goal is to shock people, get them talking and take action that helps animals.

Southern Methodist University marketing professor Daniel Howard says the website will backfire. He says using a pornography website to promote a message isn't socially acceptable to a vast majority of Americans.

Rajy says Nov. 7 is the earliest that PETA could receive approval for the website.
