And then there was the 12th day, on the 12th month in the 12th year of the new millennium.
12-12-12 is not just a triple date sequence on the calendar, it's the last one we'll see in our lifetimes.
Easy to remember for an anniversary, the date means luck and good energy for some South Floridians who are penciling in the rare numerical lineup for special events from weddings to holiday parties .
"That date resonates with the vibration and characteristics of beauty, love, laughter and fun,'' said Marcy Heller, a numerologist in Delray Beach . "Twelve is the energy of creativity, artistic beauty, harmony, celebration."
In that spirit, county clerks are expecting a wedding rush that Wednesday. The Clerk and Comptroller of Palm Beach County is asking couples who want to exchange vows that day with their office to register by Dec. 7.
To make it more special, Clerk Sharon Bock will perform some of the ceremonies at the county's Historic Courthouse at 300 N. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach , instead of the nearby main courthouse traditionally used for civil ceremonies.
"It's a historic kind of day since there's not going to be a 13-13-13,'' said Jackie Halderman, communications manager for the Clerk's Office. "We are offering the Historic Courthouse for folks who want to mark this wedding day in a historic way."
The Broward County Clerk of the Court Office in downtown Fort Lauderdale also is bracing for double the number of wedding ceremonies.
"We have couples asking us to get married at 12 on 12-12-12,'' said Cathy Kellerman, court operations manager for the Clerk's Office, where her staff saw spikes of couples marrying on other special consecutive dates such as 6-6-6 and 7-7-7. On average, about 10 couples a day tie the knot at the downtown facility, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Non-wedding events are also taking place including "12.12.12: The Concert for Sandy Relief," a music fundraiser at Madison Square Garden in New York City. And Dec. 12 is also World Hoop Day, an international event that raises money to buy hula-hoops for needy kids. That event has been held on previous sequential dates such as Nov. 11, 2011 and Oct. 10, 2010.
In South Florida, about 1,000 technology professionals will network Dec. 12 at the inaugural IT Palooza at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. The event is a daylong series of workshops that culminate with a holiday party for the local information technology community.
"Gathering 1,000 people on one date, it helps to have a date that people can remember,'' said Alex Funkhouser, executive director of IT Palooza and president of SherlockTech Staffing.
"And it's before the end of the world," he added, referring to the Dec. 21, 2012, Mayan prophecy.
But mostly, 12-12-12 seems to be more popular among lovebirds, who are counting on the date to be ever-lasting.
A recent survey by David's Bridal estimated that 5,000 brides will wed Dec. 12, compared with the 485 who married Dec. 12, 2011.
Local wedding organizers say 12-12-12 just sounds pleasant. "It really rolls off the tongue,'' said Cindy Pierce, wedding and special events manager at The Addison, a 1920s estate in Boca Raton that is booked for a Dec. 12 wedding.
"A lot of my brides like to pick a date that is easy for the future husband and their families to remember,'' Pierce said. "Like on Save-the-Date [cards], a lot of the brides are looking to personalize the wedding and tell their story."
Yalynn Marques has sent out her beige and dark gold-hued invitations with Dec. 12, 2012, written out for her upcoming nuptials to Orlando Williams.
But she didn't pick the date. Williams did, when he proposed to her on Dec. 11, 2011. The wedding date also will commemorate his grandmother's wedding anniversary: Dec. 12, 1953.
"I thought it was a great idea,'' said Marques, a legal assistant in Miami. "It will be easier to remember. If he can't remember that one day, he is in trouble."
