A man driving with his family along a New York City highway was attacked by a group of motorcyclists who chased his SUV for more than 50 blocks after it bumped into one of the bikes, which had stopped suddenly, police said.
The assault on the 33-year-old man began around 1:30 p.m. Sunday on the West Side Highway after he got into an accident with one of the bikers around 125th Street.
After the driver and motorcyclist pulled over, they were quickly surrounded by 20 to 30 bikers who began damaging the victim's Range Rover, police said.
On video taken by one of the bikers you can see one of the bikes slow down in front of the Range Rover. The SUV runs into a bike and suddenly dozens of angry bikers surround the vehicle.
Inside, police say, was 33-year-old Alexian Lien with his wife and infant daughter.
“They take their helmets and they start to dent his car and apparently his tires are slashed there,” said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly.
Desperate to escape the volatile and violent scene, Lien takes off plowing over three motorcyclists breaking one of their legs. But it doesn't end there.
The bikers continue their chase and a few miles up the road surround the SUV again. One biker runs up to the car, opens Lien's door and attempts to pull him out.
Minutes later, off the highway in Washington Heights, bikers start striking the vehicle. And just after the video stops, police say Lien is pulled out and slashed in the face in front of his terrified family.
“One of the bikers, he got off his bike and started attacking the person in the Range Rover with his helmet, breaking the windows and after they got him out of his car, they beat him up,” said witness Christopher Quinones.
Lien was taken to a hospital where he required stitches to his face. His wife and child were not injured. He was not charged.
On Tuesday, police arrested the biker who was involved in the initial accident. Christopher Cruz, 28, was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, endangering the welfare of a child and menacing. He was not injured in the accident.
Police believe some of the bikers belong to a gang known as Hollywood Stuntz. They said the motorcyclists were part of a planned but unauthorized event in which hundreds of riders gathered outside of Manhattan, with the intent of driving into Times Square en masse.
