Scientists from NOAA’s Fisheries Service captured the squid at a depth of 1500 feet, on July 30.
Researchers were studying sperm whale prey when the squid was caught in a trawl, according to NOAA.
Researchers preserved their catch and sent it to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum for Natural History for further study.
The research team is funded by the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
