WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - There are parts of a car that you don't think about on a daily, monthly or even yearly basis, but some things need to be fixed to save money in the long run.
Bruce Jacobs, owner of Military Brake and Alignment in West Palm Beach says, “Putting it off is only prolonging the inevitable."
With the help of Jacobs, we created a top 5 list of car maintenance tips to save you money
#1 TIMING BELT
Check your timing belt. This is something you'll have to bring in to a shop to check out. It's mileage based, so about 100 thousand miles is the threshold to change a belt.
If you don't it could change a repair job of hundreds of dollars into a big engine repair amounting to thousands of dollars.
"It can cause major damage to the engine. It can bend the valves. Not only that it can leave you stranded, it can cost double, three times the amount to fix it," said Jacobs.
# 2 WATER PUMP
Jacobs says get this changed at the same time you're getting your timing belt changed.
"The labor is very minor, to change a water pump with the timing belt and you're already right there," said Jacobs.
Both the timing belt and water pump should be changed at 100,000 miles for most vehicles.
# 3 ALIGNMENT
Get your alignment checked once a year. If you don't have a proper alignment that can lead to bad gas mileage and even structural damage.
# 4 TIRE PRESSURE
Check your tire pressure at least once a month. The PSI recommendation is on the inside of your door.
Proper tire pressure can lead to better gas mileage and less wear and tear on your tires over the course of time.
# 5 FLUIDS
"Fluids are like blood, they're the lifeline of the car," says Jacobs.
Transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid; it's good to change these fluids out at 50,000 miles for most vehicles.
Jacobs says prolonging this is bad news "Over time they break down and get corrosion in them and when they break down that's when seals can fail," said Jacobs.
