WEST PALM BEACH, FL--A hefty reward is being offered to find the person who shot and killed a Florida panther.

The animal was discovered April 21 close to the Hendry Correction Institute on private property. The location borders the Big Cypress National Preserve.

The panther may have been dead for as long as a week when it was found.

Several groups have posted a reward totaling more than $15 thousand.

The Florida panther is protected. Only about 100 still exist.
