The radio call has become achingly familiar to the Broward County Sheriff's Office: One of their own had been shot in the line of duty, for the third time in three months.

Michael Mazza was arrested at a pawn shop in Hollywood after the shooting death of 76-year-old Deputy Paul Rein. Mazza had been serving two life sentences for armed robbery.

He was alone in a van with the deputy as he was being taken to court for trial in a second robbery. Mazza had the deputy's gun with him when he was found.

Authorities believe he may have had accomplices who ambushed the deputy.

The man who says he drove Mazza to the pawn shop tells The Associated Press that Mazza wasn't wearing handcuffs when he asked for a lift.

The man says they even ate at a soup kitchen. But it wasn't until he saw Mazza's picture on the television that he realized his passenger was a fugitive.

A convicted robber involved in the fatal shooting of a 76-year-old Broward County Sheriff's deputy has been caught.

Sheriff Al Lamberti says 40-year-old Michael Mazza was arrested at a Hollywood pawn shop shortly after noon -- about four hours after Deputy Paul Rein was killed in Pompano Beach. Mazza was found with Rein's weapon.

Officials say Mazza may have had accomplices who ambushed Rein as they drove to the courthouse for his trial on a separate robbery. Rein was alone with Mazza in a medical transportation van--which was partitioned. Mazza was handcuffed and wearing a suit and tie for court.

Rein died at the hospital. His wife had talked to him 10 minutes before the shooting.

The Broward County Sheriff's Deputy that was shot and thrown from the vehicle this morning was taken to North Broward Medical Center where he died. Paul Rein, 76 years old, was a 20 year law enforcement officer.

We are told Sheriff Rein spoke to his wife about 10 minutes before the incident happen.

The suspect is wearing a black jacket, white t-shirt and tie. Police are not looking for a particular vehiclem, but they think he may have met up with his mom in Davey before fleeing and he may have had accomplices.

As a request of the Broward Sheriff's Office, all Broward County Public Schools will be on lockdown, as a precaution, until further notice.
