PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - UPDATE: The Palm Beach County School District has selected a superintendent to take over for outgoing superintendent Bill Malone.
By a 4-to-3 vote, the board chose Wayne Gent as interim superintendent of schools.
Gent will take over within a month. Malone is leaving his post because of health and family reasons.
Gent is the current chief officer of administration for the district and has tried to become the superintendent in both Martin and Indian River Counties.
The Palm Beach County School District, the nation's 11th largest school system, will select the person to lead the district on an interim basis. On Wednesday evening, the school board will choose one of the four applicants vying for the temporary post. The person that is selected could serve as interim superintendent until June of 2012.
Those four applicants have been meeting individually with school board members over the last several days. Two of the finalists are men and are current school district employees. The two other finalists are women and are retired Palm Beach County school officials. The person selected by the board will take over in early December for superintendent Bill Malone who is leaving his post because of health and family reasons. Malone underwent surgery a few weeks ago, which he said was a large part of his decision to step down now.
The four applicants include E. Wayne Gent, James Kelly, Beverlyann Barton and Mary Ann Dupont. Gent is the current Chief Officer of administration for the Palm Beach County School District. Gent has tried recently to become the superintendent in both Martin and Indian River counties. James Kelly is chief of the Palm Beach County School District's police force; a post he has held since 1989. Other applicants include Beverlyann Barton, a retired superintendent and recent member of the district's budget advisory committee. The remaining candidate is Mary Ann Dupont, a retired assistant superintendent, working since 2004 as an educational consultant. The board hopes to choose a permanent superintendent by March 1.
