WEST PALM BEACH, Fla - Over the last 20 years self-proclaimed workout enthusiast Elizabeth Crippen has seen it all, from step aerobics to spin and everything in between.
"It's an addiction. It's like my cup of coffee in the morning,” she said.
But these days Elizabeth gets her fix by doing crossFit, the latest craze in fitness.
"CrossFit is just fun," she said.
So I put Elizabeth to the test. We checked her heart rate before and after her workouts. This would show which workout made Elizabeth work the hardest and in turn determine which routine burned the most calories. Fitness experts say staying in a higher heart rate zone burns more calories.
Before her two workouts on separate days, Elizabeth's heart rate was between 80 and 85 beats per minute.
After 14 minutes and 46 seconds of doing CrossFit, Elizabeth's heart rate was 220 beats per minute. After 14 minutes and 46 seconds on the treadmill running at six miles per hour, her heart rate was 190 beats per minute. In this case CrossFit has the edge.
"If it's a calorie efficiency deal, you can't beat what's called a compound movement, a movement that uses a lot of muscle groups,” said Matt Brewster, a CrossFit trainer.
From kettle bell swings to squat presses, that's the hallmark of CrosFfit. Palm Beach State College Wellness Center Specialist Lyn Becker says there's an even bigger factor to staying fit.
"You have to figure out what works for you and go with that. Some people reach a plateau, then it's time to do something different. Variety is key,” she said.
