MIAMI, Fla. - A private bus headed toward West Palm Beach hit an overpass at the entrance of Miami International Airport, killing two people and injured dozens of passengers, according to airport officials.
Authorities identified the two men killed in the bus crash as Serafin Castillo, 86, and Francisco Urana, 56.
The body of one deceased passenger was pulled from the bus late Saturday morning while a second person died after being taken to a hospital, Miami-Dade police confirmed.
The other passangers aboard the bus were transported to local area hospitals, according to police.
Airport spokesman Greg Chin said the bus hit the overpass going into the airport's arrivals section on Saturday morning.
Ramon Ferriero, 47, the driver of the bus, apparently took a wrong route during a trip, which excluded the airport as a destination, according to Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Lt. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz.
“A Jehovah Witness group headed toward West Palm Beach was aboard the bus,” said airport spokesman Greg Chin.
The driver, interviewed by investigators, indicated being unfamiliar with the airport, officials said. The driver apparently misjudged the height of the overpass in the single-vehicle crash, officials said.
The bus was going about 20 mph when it hit the overpass in the arrivals section of the airport, Chin said.
The bus was privately owned and typically used for tours, though police believe all the passengers were local residents, not tourists, police said.
