Teen charged with trying to smother baby

SOUTH BAY, Fla. (AP) -- A Palm Beach County teen reportedly tried to smother her baby and throw it trash bin.

The sheriff's office reports that 15-year-old Lakeshia A. Crawford was charged Monday with aggravated child abuse and released the same day.

Authorities say the 6-month-old boy was crying on New Year's night and Crawford began shouting at him to stop. Witnesses say she tried to smother the baby, claiming she was going to kill him.

Crawford reportedly took the infant outside and tried to throw him in a trash bin, but her mother's boyfriend stopped her.

Paramedics were called to treat the child.

The Florida Department of Children and Families also were also investigating.
