STUART, FL--The man who found $3,100 in a dumpster is now $3,100 richer.
Warren Bendix found the money behind a picture of the Apollo 8 liftoff. The picture was next to a dumpster at the Sierra Condos in Stuart.
Bendix didn't hesitate, he immediately turned the money over to Stuart Police.
After the initial news reports of his good deed, the family of Lyle Johnson came forward to claim the cash. They recognized the picture as a gift they'd given Johnson last year.
Johnson also lived in the Sierra Condos, but committed suicide in December.
A cleaning company tossed out the picture over the weekend.
Johnson's family decided to let Bendix keep the money and officially signed it over to him Thursday.
Bendix suffers from a back injury, so he knows how he'll spend part of the cash. "If I can get an electric bike or a moped, I wouldn't have to pedal a bike and I wouldn't have to walk and I could get around a lot easier and a lot further," Bendix said.
He says he needs to pay back his girlfriend. He also plans to give some of the money to charity.
The rest he's putting in his bank account so he's not tempted to spend it all at one time.
