TALLAHASSEE, FL--Almost 4-thousand people in Florida are awaiting an organ transplant, and the state is concerned about finding donors for those in need.

Until today, Floridians who wished to become a donor would have to sign up in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Now Floridians can go online to register as an organ donor.

The Joshua Abbott Organ Donor Registry was launched today.

Electra Bustle, the Secretary of the Department of Motor Vehicles says the new online registry will make it easier to sign up. “Folks had to come into the drivers license offices to register to become a donor. And so, that might mean once every four or six years they’ll be in a driver’s license office to renew a driver’s license. What better way than to allow 24/7 access to people who are interested in becoming donors?”

There are 15 million drivers in Florida.  Five million of them have signed up to donate their organs.  The state hopes the new website will increase the number of donors. To sign up as an organ donor go to donatelifeflorida.org
