STUART, FL -- The Florida Highway Patrol is working a triple fatality at Cove Road and Federal Highway. The accident happened just west of the intersection in a construction zone.

Officials say an SUV hit a moving front end loader. All three occupants in the SUV have been confirmed dead. Two were confirmed deceased at the scene, the driver was airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center in critical condition and died a short time later. The driver of the front end loaded sustained no injuries.

FHP says the construction vehicle has just dumped a load as part of a widening project on Cove Road when it couldn't get out of the road in time. The SUV smashed into it at what appears to be a high rate of speed. FHP confirms speed was a factor.

The speed limit on Cove Road is 35mph. The accident happened just after 2am and remains closed. Traffic is being re-routed.
