There was a firestorm of controversy after applicants complained that  potential employers were demanding Facebook passwords.

What else are interviewers asking? We list seven questions that are illegal for employers to ask.

Any questions that force you to reveal your age, race, national origin, religion, gender or sexual orientation are forbidden.

Some questions that you have the right to refuse to answer:

  1. How long have you been working? They may be fishing for your age. They also can't ask when you graduated from high school or college. They can ask about your experience in a particular field.
  2. Is English your first language? They aren't allowed to ask your national origin, because it can lead to discrimination.
  3. Have you ever been arrested? They can ask if you have been convicted of any crimes.
  4. Are you married? They aren't allowed to ask about your marital status plus it might reveal your sexual orientation.
  5. Do you have children?  They may be trying to find out how much time you have available, but they aren't allowed to use children against you.
  6. What religion are you? This is absolutely illegal to ask. They can ask what days you are available to work.
  7. Do you have any outstanding debt? Interviewers have to have your permission to inquire about your credit history. They can't use it against you unless you are applying for a position managing money.

You don't have to answer the questions but you should be prepared to politely refuse.
