Many of us buy store brands to save some money, especially with beef and vegetable prices soaring this summer due to the 2012 drought.

A generic, no-name product can save money, and you may not even notice the difference.

But there are some good generics, and some bad generics.

The AOL website Walletpop.com listed a half dozen products you should always buy generic:

-Acetaminophen and ibuprofen

-Pantry staples, like flour, sugar, and salt: Can you tell the difference? Didn't think so.

-HDTV cables: Many magazines and websites say a $9 digital cable works as well as a $99 one.

-Alkaline batteries: Even Consumer Reports says generics can work as well, often at half the price.

-Bagged salad: Lettuce is lettuce.

Generics You May Want to Avoid

But from the "doesn't that stink" file, some generic products just don't taste or feel right.

Generic ketchup? Generic potato chips? If someone serves you those at a picnic, you'll probably say "doesn't that stink."

With some items, we're still willing to pay a lot more for the name brand.

Unfortunately, there's really no such thing as generic brands when it comes to fresh produce, steak, chicken or ground beef.

Supermarket prices are rising from the drought, and are expected to continue climbing this fall when it comes to items fresh from the farm.

As always, don't waste your money.
