Dole bagged salads recalled for potential Listeria contamination

(CNN) -- Dole Fresh Vegetables announced Monday that the company is voluntarily issuing a precautionary recall of 1,077 cases of bagged salads due to a possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses have been reported in association with the product.

According to a press release from the company, the recall was prompted when a sample tested by the State of North Carolina yielded a positive result for Listeria.

The salads were distributed in six U.S. states: Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. They include Kroger Fresh Selections Greener Supreme coded N158 211B 1613 KR04 with Use-by date of June 19 and UPC 11110 91039, Kroger Fresh Selections Leafy Romaine coded N158 111B KR11 with Use-by date of June 19 and UPC 11110 91046 and Wal Mart Marketside Leafy Romaine coded N158111B with Use-by date of June 19 and UPC code 81131 02781.

According to the FDA, Listeria is an organism that can cause foodborne illness. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. Pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk and most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

In April, Dole issued a recall for 756 cases of Seven Lettuces salad due to a positive result for Salmonella contamination in a test conducted by the State of New York. In 2011, a cantaloupe-related outbreak of Listeria was linked to 13 deaths and 72 illnesses in 18 states.
