All-new Ford Focus with fuel economy package certified at 40mpg highway mileage

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The all-new Ford Focus has joined the ranks of vehicles in the automaker's stable to achieve a 40mpg highway certification.

The EPA verified the rating for the Ford Focus wih the Super Fuel Economy (SFE) package, complimenting a 28mpg city rating, making for an appealing enticment for customers with an appetite for fuel efficiency.

“Our customers tell us that fuel economy is the top reason for purchasing a Focus,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “The all-new Focus meets that demand with great fuel economy, class-leading technologies and features, exceptional standards of craftsmanship and driving dynamics typically reserved for larger, more expensive vehicles.”

To achieve this lofty goal, Ford cites technological advancements that include pairing their new 2.0-lite engine with a six-speed automatic transmission, using high-efficiency tires with aero wheel covers and active grille shutters to help with aerodynamics. If air is required to cool the engine, the grille vents open. If not, the vents close which help reduce drag.

Ford Motor Company now touts four 2011 vehicle models that achieve the highway fuel efficiency EPA rating, making it the first automaker to do so. The Focus with the SFE package joins the Fiesta with SFE, Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid all get at least 40mpg highway, according to the 2011 EPA Fuel Economy Guide.
