Are you looking for a fun, easy and inexpensive project to do with your kids at home?
Angie Mozilo, author of AZ Mom of Many Hats Blog and Vlog, shows us just the project for you and your kids to try for under $6.
Tie dye has been a go-to project for ages. It doesn’t take a lot of skill, just a bit of patience, openness to creativity and a willingness to try something new.
What you'll need:
-Liquid dye (prepare as the packaging says), Mozilo recommends RIT brand.
-Containers to hold dye (glass or foil pans)
-Spoon to mix the dye
Optional:
-A bleaching pen
-Stencil
-Gem glue and gems (Mozilo recommends Swarovski crystals in bulk)
Mozilo says when choosing your colors, remember to think of how the two colors will look if blended. For example, if you have yellow and blue, make sure you are okay with there being a green area where the two colors have blended, just think of the color wheel from art class.
Follow these steps to a successful tie-dye shirt:
1. Place the shirt between the two containers of dye, half of the shirt in one color and half in the other. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes. The longer it sits, the more vibrant the color.
2. When it is the vibrancy you want (remember color will lighten some when it is rinsed and dry) remove it from the dye, not letting the sides touch each other.
3. Rinse shirt in running cold water till it runs clear, then a quick rinse in hot soapy water.
4. Let dry completely. Then you are ready to embellish!
