(CNN) - Even though Eddie Murphy didn't ask for advice on hosting the Oscars, Steve Martin is giving it anyway.
Moviefone reports that Martin has posted an open letter to fellow "Saturday Night Live" alum Murphy on his site, SteveMartin.com .
A hosting veteran, Martin has helmed the Academy Awards three times (solo in 2001 and 2003, and with Alec Baldwin in 2010).
In the note, the comedian advises Murphy on next year's gig, detailing how to deal with losing nominees backstage: "Pat their backs, then shake your head sadly," he directs. "It's a blast!"
Martin also provides a great backup plan if Murphy's energy runs low midway through the show: "Give Neil Patrick Harris a Red Bull and throw some sheet music at him."
And most importantly, "Remember to relax and have a good time while 12,000 live bloggers rip you to shreds," Martin jokes.
But after all the chuckles, Steve offers a heartfelt message to his successor (and "Bowfinger" co-star): "I wish you all the best on your Oscar hosting gig." Aww.
