A New York-based film buff was given the opportunity to see the new Star Trek movie just days before he succumbed to cancer, reports The Hollywood Reporter .
Daniel Craft was told he had terminal cancer less than six weeks ago. His family and friends made every effort to make his last days as comfortable as possible.
Craft's friend Doug posted a plea from Daniel's wife, Paige, on the popular Internet site Reddit, asking if it were possible for Daniel to see the film before his time ran out. The message got picked up by social media and the press and made it all the way to the Director of Star Trek: Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams.
Abrams allowed him to be able to see an early rough cut of the movie, which won't hit theaters until May.
Craft's friend Grady Hendrix wrote in a follow-up post on Reddit:
"Paige, Dan's wife, got a voicemail from JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof that was very nice and very straightforward: a producer for the movie would get in touch with them. The next day, one of the film's producers showed up at the door of their apartment with a DVD containing a very rough cut of Star Trek: Into Darkness in his hands. Paige had made popcorn, Dan had spent the previous day resting so he could sit through the movie, and after signing about 200 non-disclosure agreements they watched the film and had a blast.
Afterwards, Dan got back into bed, exhausted, and didn't get out again. Yesterday he was pretty non-responsive and Paige took him to the hospital for hospice care. Last night, at 10:15pm, with Paige and his brother in his room, Dan died. The last thing he got to do that gave him pleasure was watch the new Star Trek movie."
Hendrix told The Hollywood Reporter , "Of course, he loved the film. It was the last thing he got to do before he passed away."
Daniel Craft was 41-years-old.
