(CNN) -- It's probably fair to say that funnyman Fred Willard isn't laughing this morning.

CNN has confirmed that the "Anchorman" actor was arrested in Los Angeles Wednesday night for lewd conduct.

The Los Angeles Police Department was doing a routine inspection on Santa Monica Boulevard when officers came across Willard "engaged in lewd conduct" in an adult theater, a police spokesman confirmed to CNN.

He was arrested at about 8:45 pm and transported to the Hollywood division police department, police said. The 72-year-old "For Your Consideration" and "Best in Show" star has since been released.

A rep for Willard had no comment on the matter.
