Paranoid Hugh Jackman is so desperate not to fall ill during his upcoming one-man-show Broadway run, he is taking a course of antibiotics.
The X-Men star's Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway officially gets underway on Thursday (10Nov11) and he admits rehearsals have taken a toll on his body.
He's taking medical precautions because he doesn't want a repeat of the time he fell ill during a West End production of musical Oklahoma and experienced a humiliating moment onstage.
Speaking to New York Post columnist Cindy Adams, he recalls, "I wasn't feeling well. It was flu. I did Friday night's show but woke Saturday morning and thought I should take a day off. However, unwilling to miss a show, I thought I'll manage to get through it because it was a matinee and nobody knew who the hell I was.
"The moment I sang my voice went. I put my hands up. I was shaking. It was obvious I couldn't continue, and I felt totally humiliated. I actually managed to say, 'I'm sorry. I don't want to ruin your afternoon.'
"Now, understand, my understudy had never ever been on. Not once. Ever. Plus the guy had a full beard. In two minutes he shaved it off, put my clothes on and ran out. But he'd not sung any of the songs once in our nine months. Didn't even know the words to Surrey With the Fringe on Top. Facing the audience he went 'da-da-dada-da.' Oh, it was awful."
