NEW YORK, NY - "The Union," directed by Cameron Crowe, will open the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.

The documentary follows singer Elton John, during the making of his 2010 album The Union. During the recording sessions, John collaborated with his musical hero Leon Russell.

The two music icons performed together during the 1970s, but before writing songs for the album, neither John nor Russell had spoken with one another for over 38-years.

According to Reuters , Crowe will release another music-themed documentary this year on the band Pearl Jam.

The world premiere of "The Union" will open the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival on April 20th in Manhattan. A free outdoor concert performance by Elton John will follow.
