August 14, 2012 - After seventeen days of unprecedented sports television, the games of the thirtieth Olympiad have come to a close on NBC and WPTV NewsChannel 5 is atop the medals stand.
From the opening ceremonies on Friday July 27th, WPTV NewsChannel 5 began a record setting pace for television viewership. Coverage of the opening ceremonies saw WPTV tied for number two in the country with the NBC affiliate in Washington D.C. with a 26.8 rating and a 45 share.
Each night of the games WPTV’s ratings made them one of the top 15 rated affiliates across the country, most nights within the top 10. Once again WPTV dominated the ratings by out-delivering the NBC network’s tremendous national ratings by an average of 14% percent. As one of only three NBC affiliates on the East Coast to finish in the top ten, WPTV’s strength in daytime, evening and late night bested the competition’s programming by an average of 3 to 1. WPTV was the second highest NBC affiliate on the East Coast for daytime coverage and tied for 7th place in overall viewership.
With a tour de force of gold medal winners in swimming, track & field, volleyball, soccer, basketball and more, the NBC coverage on WPTV NewsChannel 5 brought the best in American sport to over half a million local viewers each night of the games.
Sunday August 12th, saw WPTV NewsChannel 5 pour on the power with a decisive number one finish in the country for the closing ceremonies among all NBC affiliates, and besting the national average by 37%.
“We are elated that our local viewers ardently supported the coverage for the past seventeen days and we look forward to NBC’s coverage of the winter games in Sochi, Russia in just 18 months. These competitions highlight the best American athletes and the pride of a nation” said Steve Wasserman, Vice President and General Manager of WPTV.
