Angela Cruz is a Multi-Media Journalist for WPTV NewsChannel 5, covering the Treasure Coast. As an experienced reporter, she brings a veteran’s perspective to the newsgathering process—from both behind and in front of the camera.
Angela has always wanted to live in South Florida, and she is thrilled that she has the opportunity to work in the perfect tropical climate. She got her first job at a small-market newsroom in her hometown in 1999, ripping scripts as a Production Assistant. At that same station, KTVE/KARD, she later became the solo anchor and producer of the morning show, “NBC 10 News Today.” She was voted the first “Best Local News Anchor” in the 2010 Best of the Delta Awards.
At her next station, KTBS/KPXJ, Angela first worked as a producer, and eventually became the station’s Education Reporter and the fill-in anchor. As a former public and private school teacher, she brought an insider’s perspective of how local education policy shapes our future. During her tenure covering that beat, Louisiana saw some of the biggest, and most controversial, changes to education in decades.
Angela has worn many hats, from news to promotions and creative services. She is a member of the Asian-American Journalists Association, and she represented her home state to millions of worldwide listeners when she was featured on the BBC as the first Asian-American to compete in the Miss Louisiana Pageant (in which she was voted Miss Congeniality!). Angela is a classically trained pianist, and she spent more than a decade serving as a church organist.
She looks forward to experiencing everything the Treasure Coast has to offer, and covering the stories that matter to you. If you have a story idea for Angela, you can email her at Angela.Cruz@wptv.com .
