Vero Beach - What these women have in common has brought them closer together through the years. Sons and daughters in the military who are overseas. Pam Proctor says they started the Military Moms Prayer Group in 2006. "It was really a divine nudge. I just had this little voice in my head that God was telling me to start a prayer group because at the time my son was about to go to Iraq and three of his friends from high school, Saint Edwards School in Vero Beach were either deployed or about to be deployed. So I knew that those moms must have been feeling the same way I did which was our hearts were breaking".
Only a few women were part of the group. Now up to twenty five women of all faiths meet every Thursday to pray.
The moms feel closer to their children while praying for them, and having poster-like pictures of their precious ones. Proctor said, "Prayer is our life line. It is the most important thing that we do. We call ourselves a circle of faith, we have Catholics, Protestants of all stripes, Jewish women, Orthodox women and we each pray in our own tradition."
The moms also send out Holidays for Heroes Boxes to hundreds of troops with help from the community.
Joyce Desrosiers also has a son in the military. "It's a way for a person to be able to donate just an item or two and for people who cannot afford to spend so much to fill a total box, but they can still donate an item then the military moms mail those for them.It comes from the heart. In fact I can cry just thinking about it and it comes from the heart. Once you have had a child in the war you never forget that feeling and you just want to help every person that you can."
