There is a plethora of social media tools and apps for residents to access during the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

-Power Outages

Florida Power and Light earlier this year launched an interactive tool on its site to help people find information about power outages in their area. The FPL Power Tracker tool can be accessed from a computer or smartphone to either alert the power company about an outage or find out about an estimated restoration time.

Florida Power and Light is also active on Twitter, sending information to customers via its @InsideFPL account.

- Local Alerts

You can receive local alerts on your smartphone with WPTV NewsChannel 5's new "Storm Shield" app. Storm Shield, available on the iPhone, is a life-saving app that acts like a NOAA Emergency Weather Radio. Click here to read reviews and learn about the Storm Shield app's features.
