I say this everytime I write one of these blogs. I really like Roger Federer. I really do, but he wins all the time. I kind of want someone to finally beat him other than Rafael Nadal in a major championship. Well, on Monday we finally saw it. Federer fell to Juan Martin del Potro in 5 sets in the U.S. Open as the newest star on the ATP Tour stunned the #1 ranked player in the world.
del Potro is a fresh face to the tennis scene that has seen Federer essentially dominate the tennis world for the past 5 years. So where do we go from here? del Potro provides Federer another challenge in addition to Nadal who actually lost to del Potro in the semifinals of the tournament last week.
So we go into 2010 with yet another champion who at the age of 20 will provide hopefully some great runs at grand slams for the next ten years. As for Federer, don't count him out at all, he's not going anywhere. He made all four majors this year and took away two of them. Not a bad way to end a 2009 season.
