Yes, I understand football is a physical and things happen in the trenches. But you can't sit here and say that eye gouging is a part of the game and that a win at all costs measure is the right approach to take. Brandon Spikes was caught red handed with his hand in the cookie jar. Or in this case the helmet. Taking his fingers and poking them inside the helmet of Washaun Ealey during the third quarter.
Things happen in football and players do things in the heat of the moment. But there's no need to go out and physically hurt someone on purpose when they are completey rendered defenseless. Spikes took this to a whole new level and stained the Gators with a no pun intended, "Black Eye" to a big victory over Georgia on Saturday.
What's even more shocking is how head coach Urban Meyer is handling the situation. Instead of suspending him a game, Spikes is merely sitting out a half against lowly Vanderbilt this Saturday. Really? Not playing him a half is really going to be the punishment which ultimately could of led to a an athlete having his eyes poked out or even worse losing his sight? I don't fault Urban Meyer for too many things, but I think this is a joke. I understand the Gators are rolling along and on the verge of winning a possible 2nd straight National Title. But sometimes disipline is what's needed here and not a slap on the wrist to when you have a very serious violation when it comes to sportsmanship.
Shame on Meyer for this and for taking the attitude of not playing a half a football game will teach Spikes his lesson. It won't and it shouldn't be tolerated at all. But winning has become what's most important for Gator nation and not what's best when it comes to teaching the lesson.
