WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- With so many types of Life Jackets or PFD's on the market, how do you choose the one that's right for you? Actually, it's not too hard. You just need to be "in the know."
The type of water sport activity you will be doing is key when making your decision. With at least five types to choose from, you will find each PFD is designed for a specific purpose relating to type of activity, water conditions, even how far from shore you plan to be. Just make your selections and keep in mind the following criteria:
All PFDs must be Coast Guard-approved and each person on your boat must have one. Remember,
all children under the age of 13 MUST wear a life jacket when boating. Additionally, our friends at Boat US suggest always selecting brightly colored jackets so they are easier to spot on the water. Make sure they fit right and that they are COMFORTABLE.
While it's easy to be frugal and buy the least expensive equipment, just think how you'll feel about that decision should you ever really need to use your purchase.
I remember the story about a husband and wife couple who survived 66 days at sea after their vessel was attacked in the Pacific by pilot whales on the first leg of their voyage. The wife told us that she was furious at her husband for not purchasing the hard bottom option for their life raft. This of course was days and days after they were forced to survive inside it. She told us that the soft bottom of the raft was difficult to move around in and eventually was the cause of numerous health issues.
I'm not saying he was frugal, I have no idea. But, like most of us, he was probably ever optimistic and thinking they'd never have to use it so one has a tendency to just get the basics. You know what I mean? The feeling that "nothing is ever going to happen to us, it's always the other guy?" Accidents happen and they happen fast and we have to be ready.
Statistics show that over 70% of all recreational boating accidents is death by drowning. Take your emergency gear seriously. Don't stow it and forget it. Make sure your Coast Guard approved gear is comfortable, brightly colored and designed specifically for the type of activity you will be engaged in.
One last thought, care is very important too. Be sure your investment is kept dry and that all parts are good working condition.
