Garage sales vs auctions which is better?

Garage sales: the Saturday morning ritual.

Stuart resident  Jennifer Hoskins says, "It took a good week or week and a half to get everything organized."

But for Jennifer  and many other garage sale warriors...it's worth it.

Jennifer says she usually makes a couple of hundred dollars at her garage sales.

But is there a better way--to get rid of old stuff, make money and salvage your Saturday?

The Palm City auction could be a good alternative.

Every Wednesday---people scope out what's up for bid---and take a seat at 6 o'clock sharp--ready to buy.

Steve Estep is the auctioneer. He says they will sell a mountain of merchandise in 5 hours.

Some of it comes from estates...but the rest comes from people like you and me.

I decided to clean out my house and sell some things that I no longer used.

Appraiser Tim Luke convinced me to skip my next garage sale--and give the auction a try.

My sons old remote controlled trucks... some decorative metal planes, accent pieces like pillows, vases, art work, exercise equipment and hand painted furniture were just some of the things I wanted to get rid of.

Appraiser Tim Luke says, "If you haven't touched it, worn it, used it or seen it in 6 months..get it out."

Tim says the benefit of selling at an auction is that you don't have to haggle like you you do at a garage sale and everything sells no matter what.

Within twenty minutes of the start of the auction I had made $100 dollars.

But not everything sells as high as you might hope--my 5 pillows only brought in $17.50 and the Nautilus exercise bike went for $70.

But other items like the remote controlled trucks did better than I thought.  They sold for fifteen to twenty dollars each.

My art work averaged $35 to $50 dollars a piece...those red vases--they sold for $25.

It was the inexpensive metal airplanes that really got people bidding--they ended up selling for 40 bucks each.

I ended up making more in 45 minutes than most people make in a found hour long garage sale.
