FT. PIERCE, FL -- There could soon be a new artificial reef to explore off the Treasure Coast this summer.
According to our newspartners at the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, Saint Lucie County authorities are about to discuss sinking a 65-foot barge reef on Memorial Day and drop at least three 500-ton secondary concrete reefs in the following summer months.
The concrete reefs will be a couple hundred feet from each other with one on top of the barge reef. They will be dropped 6 to 12 nautical miles, which is about 7 to 14 land miles, from the shoreline.
The smaller reefs, which include lagoons, juvenile fish habitats and passive fishery reserves, will be placed in a way so fishers and divers won’t exploit and deplete the marine populations.
