Granting Grandma Her Wish

Last Update: 5/02/2008 5:22 am

REPORT #1683

"We don't in this country really think about our seniors and our elders.  We have this idea that they've lived their life, and if it didn't happen, it's not going to happen."

A WISH COME TRUE

BACKGROUND: The Twilight Wish Foundation was founded in 2003 in Bucks County, Penn. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to saying "Thank you" to elderly people in poverty who have served others throughout their lives by granting them individual wishes and planning group celebrations.

To have an individual wish granted, seniors must be over the age of 68 and have an income of less than 200 percent of poverty level with assets of $100,000 or less. Wish recipients must also have the physical and cognitive ability to formulate, communicate and fulfill the wish. Lastly, seniors must have documented history of their positive contributions to the welfare of others over their lifetime.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Twilight Wish Foundation looks for individuals, organizations and corporations to help make wishes come true. Anyone can volunteer time or money to help create the "unexpected thank you" experience. Volunteers are needed in the areas of starting a chapter, translation services, development and fundraising, medical outreach, special events, web site design, award celebrations organizers, general administration, wish granting and many others.

WISHES: Anyone can make a wish for any qualified senior, including them self. To get a "Make a Wish Form" go to twilightwishfounation.org.

A recent wish that was fulfilled came from Arlene in Leominster, Mass. Her wish read: "A former teacher and WWII WAVE, Arlene wishes for a piano and large print classical sheet music in her room at the nursing home. She loves to play the piano for others."

Twilight Wish Foundation will work to grant qualifying wishes as funding and resources are available. The only types of wishes that will automatically be denied are political or legal in nature, housing reconstruction, bill payments or requests for cash, medical items (including surgery or pharmaceutical items) and requests that are dangerous in nature.
