COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer have left the state and are spending their holiday weekend in Florida.

That kind of absence might have gone with little attention a month ago. But then Sanford went to Argentina to visit his mistress without telling his staff or Bauer where he was going and couldn't be found for four days.

On Saturday, staff for both men insist they are moments away from responding if anything happened in South Carolina.

Sanford is in Florida working on reconciling with his wife and family at her father's home in Hobe Sound.  Bauer is in Daytona, Fla., watching Saturday night's NASCAR race.
