WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- It's a highly anticipated move that could hopefully narrow the source of a possible cancer cluster in The Acreage. Tuesday morning analysts from the Department of Environmental Protection will begin taking water samples from wells in 50 Acreage homes in a ten square mile area.
The homes were chosen by lottery so it's a random cross-section of houses. The tests will begin Tuesday, August 4th and continue for five days.
Soil and water will be tested at two schools in the Acreage as well. Those schools are Golden Grove Elementary and Western Pines Middle School.
This major move comes under pressure from the community in The Acreage to find answers. Several meetings have been held with residents since NewsChannel Five broke the story two months ago. Senator Bill Nelson has also kept a watchful eye on the situation. So far the only statistics that have been found are growing cases of cancer in the form of tumors or other cancer-related concerns.
About 50 cases have been reported so far in close proximity and for the 50,000 people who live in the rural Palm Beach County community, this step could not have come soon enough.
