PORT ST. LUCIE, FL-- Police made a disturbing discovery after finding an elderly man in Port St. Lucie Tuesday.

They responded to a call of a man in a backyard on Lucero Drive and found a 77 year old man who identified himself as Gonzalo Trevino.

Police say he told them he had left his home on nearby Violet Avenue in search of food.

When officers went to the home they discovered Trevino was living in deplorable conditions and his room had been boarded up from the outside.

"What appeared to be from the pictures is that his bedroom window... had a piece of plywood which was nailed into the drywall preventing him from getting out," said Tom Nichols of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

Apparently Trevino removed the plywood, got out of his room,  and then made a break in a 6 foot privacy fence that surrounded the home.

Police took Trevino to the hospital for treatment.

They also arrested Trevino's son and live-in girlfriend.

They face charges of elder abuse and false imprisonment.
