PORT ST. LUCIE, FL-- Lisa Portieles says her daughter came home from school proud for earning the classroom currency known as "Dolphin Dollars."
When she asked the 6-year old how she got them, Portieles couldn't believe the answer.
"She had me go to the bathroom, they have a bathroom in the classroom, and clean another child's urine off the floor. she goes, 'but mommy, I washed my hands,' " Portieles said.
The St. Lucie County School District is investigating what happened at Floresta Elementary School Monday.
According to an incident report from Port St. Lucie Police, a 6-year old went into the bathroom and discovered a puddle of urine on the floor.
She immediately walked out and told her teacher, 51-year old Martha Ensley.
Ensley told police she usually tries to determine which student made the mess and has them clean it up.
But the teacher told investigators she was in the middle of a lesson and asked the girl to help out.
The 6-year old said she did it because she quote, "Wanted Dolphin Dollars to buy stuff."
"It worries me because she's got a stack this big and I'm just imagining if she's done that, what else did she do for that stack of Dolphin cards?" said Portieles.
Portieles complained to Floresta's principal who removed Ensley from the classroom.
Ensley told police she made a poor decision, but did not realize the ramifications of it.
The officer told Ensley that she should call a custodian and if one wasn't available, clean up the mess herself.
Portieles thinks Ensley shouldn't be allowed back in the classroom. "It's terrible. I'm very sad about it. I'm very sad so I hope she does lose her job. The St. Lucie County School District would not comment other than to say they're investigating whether Ensley violated school policy.
Ensley could not be reached for comment.
