LAKE WORTH, FL-- One year ago today there was a knock on the door of Ginny Luther's home in Port St. Lucie. Men in Army uniforms broke the news. Lt. Bart Fletcher of Jensen Beach, an officer in the 1st Cavalry, had been killed. Not in the war but at the hands of a fellow soldier who had snapped.
At his VA graveside Tuesday, Ginny Luther looked back on the past year to talk about her loss.
Bart Fletcher had the leadership gene. A 4.0 student at the University of Florida, he had a tour in Iraq under his belt, a beautiful girlfriend, and dreams of working for the State Department.
When Fletcher went unarmed into a Fort Hood barracks to confront fellow solider Jody Wirawan about a theft, it all ended.
Bart was shot five times. Wirawan killed himself.
"He did great things," says Ginny. She says Bart was once like the young man who killed him...troubled and despondent. For that reason, she has somehow found a way to forgive Bart's killer.
"Something bigger will come out of this," she says.
Now Luther is meeting as many mothers of fallen soldiers as she can, offering comfort and sharing her story.
