Around 7:30, two boys, ages 9 and 10, boarded their school bus at Midtown and Pinero in Port St. Lucie. They were talking about a little girl who had been abducted at the intersection by two men driving a white van. The bus driver overheard their conversation and contacted police. An amber alert was issued, but at around noon today, it was revealed the whole thing was a hoax. A number of police agencies had been called out to assist.
Lt. Robert Fitch with the Port St. Lucie Department said the response wasn't overkill. "I would hope that if my kids or if it was my child or family member.. whether it's true or not, that the response would be the same."
The boys admitted to making up the story after seeing a van make a suspicious u-turn near them that reminded them of a crime show they saw on TV. They were each charged with a misdemeanor of filing a false report. Police aren't saying if the parents would be liable for the thousands of dollars in manpower needed for the search.
