BOCA RATON, FL -- Two and a half year old Riley McCarthy will be Buzz Lightyear for Halloween. But for some parents affording Halloween costumes is not possible, especially during this tough economy. Riley's family is doing something about the problem.
My mother was a guidance counselor in the elementary schools and she saw it while her time there that in the character parade kids would be disappointed when they couldn't get out there, everybody else has their costume and they didn't," said Joe McCarthy.
The organization 'Free Costumes For Kids' will provide costumes for children who cannot afford one. The organization is collecting new or gently used costumes that are not scary for elementary students.
"We started off looking for drop off locations and the first response we got was we need 300 costumes," according to McCarthy.
Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Boca Raton is one of the drop off sites for the costumes. McCarthy is hoping that other churches will come forward to be a drop off site.
"We've got a high school in Lake Worth that's the first production movie studio and they are doing a haunted house for Halloween and they've got a drop box and if you donate a costume you get 1/2 off your admission."
Making a difference in young lives one costume at a time.
