WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Cameron Pirozzi's parents say they did everything by the book.
When the 8-year-old from Palm Beach Gardens first came down with flu symptoms in June they took her to the doctor immediately.
Cameron's mother Kelly Pirozzi said, "That was the first thing I asked, 'Could this be swine flu?"
She claims 2 swabs by 2 different doctors both came back negative for the H1N1 virus but within days her asthmatic daughter's lungs gave out.
Doctors later told her parents swine flu was to blame.
From Saint Mary's Medical Center to Miami Children's Hospital to Jackson Memorial Hospital, Cameron spent nearly 4 months in hospitals struggling to survive, finally waking up after weeks in a coma.
Kelly said, "She looked at us and said, 'How long have I been in the hospital?"
Cameron had to slowly re-learn how to walk, eat and talk, worrying that each "I love you," could be her last.
She said, 'Mommy and daddy, don't forget my words,' " Kelly explains.
Little things that most take for granted became miraculous milestones to Cameron's parents.
"The first time your child can have ice cream, when your 8-year-old learns to write again," Kelly elaborates.
Now, the real celebration: Cameron is finally leaving the hospital to come home Thursday.
Kelly says "That on its own is a miracle!"
Her family is sharing their miracle hoping other parents will learn from them how devastating the H1N1 virus can be.
Kelly explains, "I hope people don't think this can't happen to them. Ask questions...be an advocate for your child!"
Cameron will continue rehabilitation and her mother says it could be a while before the 3rd grader can return to class at Saint Mark's Episcopal school.
A fund has been set up to help the family cover the medical costs.
