PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL --
They city of Palm Beach Gardens has voted to set aside up to $60,000 for a 9/11 tribute memorial at the Fire Station on Northlake Boulevard west of Military Trail. The memorial's centerpiece would be a section from the World Trade Center which was destroyed in the 2001 attacks. The sculpture's designer, Mark Fuller told city leaders the memorial would also feature a plaza where annual memorials could be held.
City spokesperson Donna Giuliana says the September 11th Families Assoc. is donating parts of the Trade Center, removed from the site, to local communities around the country for free.
The $60,000 approved, say Giuliana, could be used for transporting the materials, labor costs and other expenses, "but they're hoping they don't have to use very much of it," she says. There's a feeling many in the community may wish to donate to the memorial as a "labor of love," says Giuliana.
If all goes as planned, the city says it may be able to have the memorial in place in time for next year's memorial service commemorating 9/11.
