PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL--Research shows reading to your children turns on brain cells that are critical to learning and to an overall good life.
Today, NewsChannel 5 joined with the Palm Beach County Library System and many others in a special campaign to encourage all families to read together. Four hundred people attended a luncheon at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott to learn what book would be selected for this year's "Families Reading Together" event.
NewsChannel 5's Chandra Bill revealed 'The Families Reading Together' campaign book for this year. It is 'From Head to Toe,' by Eric Carle.
That is the book hundreds of Palm Beach County preschoolers, kindergarten students and first graders will be reading, in an effort to promote literacy, not only at school, but within their own homes.
Wendy Rosenfeld is with the Palm Beach County Library System. She said, "We want to remind the community about the importance of sharing books with their children. The Library system has all kinds of programs that encourage reading and life-long learning, even a literacy program for adults."
At today's luncheon, not only did families receive this year's "Reading Together" book, but Jeb Bush, Junior was there to hand-out scholarships to both parents and children who participate in literacy programs.
Nancy Tamayo-Galvez was one of the scholarship winners. "I got my G-E-D and now, I'll get a scholarship for Kaiser University."
Nancy's son also received 2-years of tuition at a Florida University. The family literacy programs are truly a community endeavor with help from the school district, businesses, charitable foundations... and of course media partners like NewsChannel 5.
