JENSEN BEACH - Mark Swart of Jensen Beach led from start to finish winning the second annual Halloween Half Marathon held Sunday morning at the Jensen Beach public beach parking area. Swart, 42, covered the 13.1-mile loop course in one hour, 24 minutes, 43 seconds. Stuart's Chad Bosch, 35, finished second in 1:28:41, and Matt Triggs, 45, of West Palm Beach was third in 1:30:59 to win the Masters (age 40 and over) title.
In the women's race, Jamie Spooner of Port St. Lucie, the cross country and track coach at Lincoln Park Academy, won the Overall title in 1:32:01. Brenda Wilson, 52, of Stuart was second in 1:40:04 and won the Masters title, while West Palm Beach's Amy Triggs finished third in 1:41:43.
Spooner is the defending women?s champion, although her time on Sunday was 1:19 slower than last year's winning time.
A record crowd of 259 runners completed the event, which was organized by the Martin County Parks and Recreation Department and hosted by the Sailfish Striders Running Club of Stuart. The scenic course took runners across the Jensen Beach Causeway, south onto Indian River Drive and into Sewall?s Point for a nearly three-mile loop before heading east across the Stuart Causeway and onto Hutchinson Island for the final three-mile straightaway finish back at Jensen Beach.
This is the second year the race has been held in Jensen Beach. The first seven years it was held in Hobe Sound.
