PORT SALERNO — One person is dead and another person was taken to a local hospital after an early Saturday morning apartment fire, according to a news release issued Saturday by Martin County Fire Rescue.

About 2:40 a.m., firefighters went to the apartment complex at 4612 S.E. Manatee Lane where an unidentified person was trapped on the second floor of the two-story building containing six apartments, the release states.

More than 35 firefighters battled against heavy fire and smoke but efforts where hampered when the floor became unstable and "deemed unsafe," the release states. The fire was contained to one apartment, however, other apartments did sustain smoke damage.

Officials have yet to release the identity of the person who died or the identity and condition of the person taken to the hospital.

The state Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
