“Instead of just having a couple of items per week, we’ve been saving things for over a year and we’re doing it all at once through eBay,” said Thrift Store Manager Terry Picciolo. “We want to make a big impact.”
Picciolo mentioned that eBay auctions are popular among large, major nonprofits including the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and the American Heart Association.
To accommodate nonprofits, eBay developed MissionFish, which helps nonprofits raise money through its interface. Once nonprofit organizations register with MissionFish, they receive 100 percent of the auction item proceeds, where as eBay charges for-profit account users a certain percentage of the total sale.
“Essentially, we’re using this as a tool to help the animals, help the Humane Society, and reach more people,” said Picciolo.
